In these challenging and uncertain times, we learn much about ourselves and our priorities. In this spirit, we want to share with you the steps that Thompson Island Outward Bound is taking to address the unprecedented public health situation brought about by COVID-19.
As the situation continues to evolve, our top priority remains the health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff, and community. We are following all federal, state, and local guidelines, and will revise our response as these guidelines change. Please check this page and our COVID-19 Resources page for the most up-to-date information.
The timeliest updates are:
We have cancelled the spring education season on the Island, in line with BPS closing their schools for 6 weeks and canceling all excursions for the year.
All conferences and events have been suspended until at least May 1.
All spring corporate volunteer days have been canceled; fall volunteer days are categorized as “active.”
The Island is closed to the public until further notice.
We have temporarily ceased all non-essential operations on the Island and at the mainland office; all employees, except a few essential personnel, are working from home.
Our facilities are receiving regular cleanings with attention to frequently touched surfaces.
When children can come safely to the Island again, and we can go back into the schools to work with youth and teachers there, we will be ready. In the meantime, we are in conversations with public officials at the city, state, and federal level about ways we can be of service now.
We hope you will support your community by practicing social distancing and by thinking of others. Look at your neighbors (physical and virtual) and find ways to care for those who are vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19 through illness, discrimination, or unemployment. Outward Bound is, after all, built on the tenets of courage, perseverance, teamwork, and, above all, compassion.
We appreciate our loyal friends who continue to support us during this time despite your own uncertainties and challenges. Once we get to the other side of this pandemic, our students will need us more than ever.
Thank you, as always, for your interest in our work and your commitment to the youth we serve.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
